Expiry of firearm licences

The Constitutional Court has delivered it’s judgment today in the matter of SA Hunters and Game Conservation Association vs The Minister of Safety and Security.

The Court found that the provisions of sections 24 and 28 of the Firearms Control Act (Act 60 of 2000), which govern the renewal and expiry of firearm licences are NOT UNCONSTITUTIONAL.

The effect of the judgement is that being in possession of a firearm with an  expired licence may lead criminal arrest and prosecution.
